Memento, a movie directed by Christopher Nolan starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano, was a movie of brilliance. From the first shots to the very end this was nothing but a unique style of shooting. The movie started off with the end, and worked its way backwards to the beginning. Its pretty hard to follow but eventually you can get the hang of it. Personally i know theres things in the movie i didnt understand, especially after only seeing it once. Someone i know has watched it around 3 times and is still discovering new things about it. Which makes it all the more interesting. Its definatly one to make you use your head. But thats what makes it so amazing.
Like i said this movies not the easiest to figure out, therefore its not so easy to explain. But to sum it all up its about a man named leonard who has a short term memory loss because of an accident. the last thing he remembers seeing is his wife dying because thats when he was struck on the head, causing the memory loss. he forgets things within a matter of about ten minutes. He holds conversations with people forgetting how they even started. So to remember things, he writes himself messages all over his body by tatooing them on and he takes lots of pictures and writes captions to explain. But the whole plot of the movie was him trying to find and kill the man that raped and killed his wife. He found two friends along the way. Natalie, who he thought he could trust ends up being the one that took his memory loss for advantage and made him do the wrong things for what he thought were the right reasons. His other friend, Teddy, was actually only always there to help him, but he thought otherwise. Lenny let his lost memories and confusing messages get the best of him making him think teddy was bad news all along. The struggles he faces brings him to learn even more confusing aggravating things, not that he would even remember them and that sentence alone describes this entire movie.
It wasnt just a mysterious thriller, but i found a lot of comedy thrown in there in a sense of sarcasm. The irony made this movie funnier than some would expect a movie like this to be. Which made it even more enjoyable. Guy Pearce, who played the main character Leonard was a great actor. Ive never heard of him before but im glad it was him. he really played out the character well and he knew what he was doing. I actually just found out brad pitt was originally hoped to play this character but he couldnt. But thats fine because Guy Pearce played it out possibly better than brad pitt would have. Carrie-Anne Moss played supporting role Natalie. She was Leonards friend and i think she did a really good job too. She had the innocent, yet not-so innocent best friend role played well. Even though she didnt know him that well. but Carrie-Anne played this out well. And the final supporting role was Joe Pantoliano playing Lennys real best friend, even though in the movie Lenny questions that because of his lack of memory, but he really is only trying to help, at least from what i understand he is.
"Memory can change the shape of a room; it can change the color of a car. And memories can be distorted. They're just an interpretation, they're not a record, and they're irrelevant if you have the facts." To Leonard memory is useless so hes learned that records are the only thing that help people remember. this movie actually opened my mind and eyes, it gave my mind an epic epiphany! not really, but it was still pretty amazing. The setting was basically the past, technically because it all happened backwards. Lenny was living in a motel for quite sometime. but he has no idea how long. Theres not just one setting for this movie, it took place all over. Outside, in peoples homes, in a bar. Many different places. But i still think it was shot very well. whether it was the right lighting or the right sound effects. There was a part that meant something to a movie, there was a continuous cut scene of Lenny on the phone but the scene was always in black and white. i think it was there to add effect, and help you follow along better.
"Dont forget Sammy.." sammy was a man from the past that Lenny was always keeping in mind, to remind himself of things, like his memory. Sammy helped him, but im not even sure sammy even existed if i understood better then i would have these answers so i probably have to watchthis film a few more times. But id say the most famous line from this movie was Leonards famous line: "I have this condition.." which was his way of attempting to explain his memory loss when hes talking to new people, unfortunatly the people he talks to already know about it, just making him feel dumb. Anyway, the costumes used in this movie was jsut normal clothes worn today, usually showing their personalities, but theres something kind of funny about Lennys clothes, which you find out in the end, theyre not even his clothes. The end of this movie explains a lot and makes the irony of everything just stand out a lot more. So if you decide to watch this movie(which i strongly recommend) make sure you pay good attention!
